Local EU Statement on the occasion of one year from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The Delegation of the European Union to Australia issues the following statement

One year on from Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine, the EU Head of Delegation and the EU Heads of Mission welcomed Ukrainian Ambassador, Vasyl Myroshnychenko to discuss the situation in the country and reaffirm that they will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes.

The EU condemns in the strongest possible terms Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which is an independent, peaceful and democratic country. This aggression constitutes a manifest violation of the UN Charter, and has brought immense suffering and destruction upon Ukraine and its people.

The heroism and suffering of the Ukrainian people in defending their country is representative of the fight for civil liberties, for human rights, for the rule of law, for free and independent media against repressive regimes. Ukrainians are fighting for more than just themselves, they are also fighting for the democratic values that are at the heart of the European project.

Together with international partners and like-minded countries such as Australia, we have been consistent in our support for Ukraine. Overall, the EU and its Member States’ economic, humanitarian and military support amounts to at least 67 billion euros since the beginning of the war. Together with our partners, we are determined to maintain this support until Ukraine prevails, as an expression to our unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
