Italian participation to AVALON 2023

Melbourne. Strengthening bilateral cooperation with Australia is at the heart of Italy’s participation in the Avalon 2023 International and Air Show, which takes place between 28 February and 5 March in Geelong. It is the largest event dedicated to the aviation and aerospace industry in the Southern Hemisphere.

It hosts 798 exhibiting companies, up 14 per cent from 2019, and 234 industry, government, defence and scientific delegations, up almost 50 per cent. More than 40 nations will be represented at the event.

In addition to the Italy stand manned by the Italian Trade Agency in Sydney and dedicated to the promotion of our excellence in the defence industry including companies such as Astra, Davi, Elettronica and Jobs, also Leonardo and Piaggio Aerospace will participate with their own exhibition space.

There is also a high-profile institutional presence with two delegations from the Ministry of Defence, led respectively by Air Force General Roberto Comelli for the Air Force and Brig. Gen Luca De Martinis for the General Secretariat of Defence, who will be taking part in a series of events and will have important bilateral meetings with their Australian counterparts over the next few days.

Satisfaction was expressed on the eve of the event by Ambassador Paolo Crudele, who will welcome the institutional delegations from Italy and discuss opportunities in Australia with the attending companies.

“After the difficult years of the pandemic emergency, the qualified presence of Italy at an appointment of such great importance testifies the renewed attention for the Australian market. It is a prestigious showcase to enhance our excellence and explore new business opportunities in a framework of progressive strengthening of bilateral cooperation also in the security sector.”

AVALON 2023 offers Australian and international industry, government and academia a global meeting platform through a specialised premium exhibition, static aircraft display and corporate space, complemented by various complementary entertainment activities.

The first three days of AVALON 2023 are open exclusively to accredited trade visitors and include a specialist conference, a symposium, conference programme and a Careers and Skills STEM day. From 3 March, the event is also open to the public.

The exhibition combines an international industry exhibition with a programme of some 59 lectures on topics related to aviation, aerospace, space and defence. Among others, important topics concerning the development of the Australian space industry, the rise of advanced air mobility transport and developments in sustainable aviation are addressed.

The success of AVALON 2023 reflects a dynamic industry looking at the future capability needs of the Australian Defence Force and the aerospace customers.

Italy’s aerospace sector exported approximately A$9.3 billion in 2019, up 7.5 per cent year-on-year. Characterised by the second highest level of R&D expenditure by Italian companies, the sector occupies a leading position in the international context, fourth in Europe and seventh in the world. Apart from a few prime contractors, 80% of the national supply chain is made up of SMEs concentrated mainly in seven technological districts.

These are companies with excellent skills, enhanced by collaboration with major national industries, research centres and universities, which have earned Italy a leading position in various fields of aeronautics and space.

The scope of activities is vast, ranging from the assembly of aircraft, helicopters and microsatellites, space launchers, vessels and military vehicles, to systems and subsystems (landing, defence systems, targeting, on-board and ground communications, radar, flight attitude, etc.) to individual parts and components, for design, engineering, experimentation, testing, maintenance, etc.
