Ambassador’s visit to the Minerals Council of Australia

Italian Ambassador Paolo Crudele met with Tania Constable, the CEO of the Minerals Council of Australia, which represents the mining sector in the country, in Canberra. The meeting focused on exploring the potential for greater bilateral collaboration between Australia and Italy in the critical materials sector. Australia is one of the richest countries on the planet in terms of minerals, among the top producers of lithium (essential for the construction of batteries for electric vehicles), ferrous metals and rare earths. The mining sector is a significant contributor to the Australian economy, accounting for over 14% of national GDP.

The meeting, held a few days after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the European Union and Australia on critical and strategic sustainable minerals, was also an operational follow-up to the economic and trade diplomacy mission carried out at the end of May by Ambassador Crudele in Western Australia. During this mission, Ambassador Crudele was able to meet with a selected representation of the Australian business community and Italian companies in the mining sector.  “One of the most pressing challenges for our country is to diversify the supply of critical materials needed for the green and digital transition. Australia, a like-minded country, represents an increasingly important partner for Italy, with whom we are working to strengthen value chains and access to raw materials,” Ambassador Crudele commented.

The Mineral Council has agreed to continue a close collaboration with the aim of facilitating the access of new Italian companies interested in the processing and refining of raw materials, as well as further investments of Australian companies in Italy.
