Also for 2024, this embassy participated with its own event in National Science Week, an Australia-wide festival with more than 1,000 public events organised between 10 and 18 August, of which almost 150 took place in the Capital alone.
Arranged in collaboration with the Australian National University, the debate tackled the topic of global warming, and more specifically climate change adaptation strategies, with an original and much appreciated formulation, based on the combination of a film screening and a scientific discussion panel on the topics covered by the film.
The film ‘Dry’ by Paolo Virzi presented to the audience a Rome affected by a severe water shortage, and examined the consequences of this on the behaviour of its inhabitants. The discussion, moderated by the Embassy’s Scientific Attaché Dr. Marco Lazzarino, included contributions by Australian National University professors Mark Howden, (one of the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and Australian member of the IPCC – Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and Hilary Bambrick, (IPCC consultant) and Dr. Jason Alexandra, Director of the Murray Darling Basin Authority, Australia’s largest watercours
The event, much appreciated by the participants, successfully combined a message of cultural promotion of a film not yet distributed in Australia with a scientific divulgation operation of great impact.
As amply illustrated by this Office in the opening remarks, the message conveyed by this event has been that Italy, along with the policies of the European Union, is actively engaged in the fight against climate change and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
