To celebrate the centenary of the birth of the great Venetian composer Luigi Nono, the Italian Embassy and the International Music Festival of Canberra presented ‘Larry and Luigi – Two Slices of History’ in the beautiful setting of the Albert Hall.
A tribute to two artists who lived at opposite ends of the globe and who left an indelible mark on the development of contemporary classical music: Larry Sitsky, pianist and emeritus professor at the Australian National University, and Luigi Nono, Italian avant-garde composer.
Luigi Nono was born in Venice on 29 January 1924. He was an innovative artist who firmly believed in the power of music as a tool for change. He pushed the boundaries of composition and technique, setting to music texts by famous poets and writers such as Giuseppe Ungaretti and Cesare Pavese, and revolutionised the landscape of electronic music.
Larry Sitsky is a composer, pianist and professor who has had a major impact on contemporary music culture in Australia.
The event is part of the Embassy’s many cultural diplomacy activities to promote intercultural dialogue.
